Impacting the Lives of Students and the Community

Mike and Andy Bales

Mike and Andy Bales

Lifelong supporters of education, Andy and Mike Bales have chosen to leave a legacy at Transylvania University.

Before attending Transylvania as a student, Andy Bales '64 visited campus from Ashland, Kentucky, often with her mother, a 1936 graduate. Her emotional connection to the school grew with friendships forged in Forrer Hall as well as the academic experiences of her elementary education classes.

After graduation, Andy taught third grade in Louisville, Kentucky. She soon married her high school sweetheart, Mike Bales, and they had two daughters, Diane and Alison. Andy stayed home to care for them and served as a volunteer. Mike transitioned from service in the U.S. Army to a career in the energy industry. His jobs took them to several U.S. cities, but eventually to Lexington, where he retired. They are now pleased to call the Bluegrass home.

"Especially in the last 15 years, we've come to appreciate Transylvania even more," said Andy. "We are strong supporters of a liberal arts education and we enjoy attending lectures and other community events."

Mike added, "I've gotten to know Dr. Michael Cairo, Interim Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Some of the things we have discussed or that I learned at a lecture have broadened my reading and my way of thinking. The critical thinking skills that Transylvania encourages are important and we want to support that."

Andy continues to serve in leadership roles in the community and with Transylvania. A past member of the Alumni Board, she is a member of the Robert Barr Society Council helping to plan activities for graduates of more than 50 years. Andy and Mike have also hosted alumni gatherings in their home, most recently to support the religious life endowment to fund a full-time chaplain at Transylvania. The school's long-term affiliation with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is yet another shared connection.

By including the school in their estate plans, the Bales will further impact the lives of future students and the community.
