The Ties That Bind

Ann and David Windley

Ann and David Windley

Family ties and shared experience initially bonded David and Ann Orme Windley '65 to Transylvania, yet what they learned from faculty, coaches and fellow classmates has resonated for a lifetime. As they celebrated their 50th reunion, they chose to honor their alma mater by leaving a legacy for future students with a planned gift for scholarships from their retirement assets.

"Transy helped me to learn the skills necessary to become a good leader, to understand my potential, and to serve others," said Ann. A very active student, she studied languages and education and was involved in numerous campus organizations. She founded A Child's World preschool in Seymour, Indiana, and then became Executive Director of Leadership Jackson County. In addition to membership on Transylvania's Board of Trustees since 1995, she has worked with the Christian Church on outreach efforts, as well as many groups in Indiana to promote literacy and social justice.

David was also an active student. He studied economics and was a member of several groups, including captain of the golf team, which led to his induction into the Pioneer Hall of Fame in 2011. After Transylvania, he received an MBA from Indiana University and worked for the CPA firm, Ernst and Ernst. Later he founded Blue & Co. When he retired after 35 years, his former colleagues established a scholarship at Transylvania for accounting students.

"Transylvania provided me the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of activities. It also prepared me for a productive career and instilled in me a desire to be of service," said David. His civic involvement led him to numerous honors as well, and in 2000, the university recognized both David and Ann with a Distinguished Service Award.

This planned gift contribution will ensure that their commitment continues beyond their lives by establishing the Ann O. Windley Endowed Scholarship for students who have demonstrated leadership and adding to the David H. Windley Endowed Scholarship.
